I've never owned a really great tripod and have limped by with less than top of the line models. That applies no more, say hello to my Really Right Stuff TVC-33S carbon fiber tripod with BH-55 Lever Release Ballhead! It's much lighter and more stable than my old aluminum Manfrotto, plus it can handle vertical shots gracefully and solidly, while my old tripod relied on friction from a cork grip pad to hold the camera steady, which never worked and caused the camera to slip downward.
